University of Leicester

The University of Leicester is founded in 1921 as a memorial to the Great War, the University of Leicester has a proud history of ambitious projects that lead to amazing discoveries. This is where genetic fingerprinting was invented in 1984 and home of the team who found King Richard III. In our second century, we will continue to aspire to be the very best in everything that we do.

It is a leading UK university committed to international excellence through the creation of world changing research and high quality, inspirational teaching. Leicester is consistently one of the most socially inclusive of the UK’s leading universities with a long-standing commitment to providing fairer and equal access to higher education.

The university is home to a large medical school, Leicester Medical School, which opened in 1971. The school was formerly in partnership with the University of Warwick, and the Leicester-Warwick medical school proved to be a success in helping Leicester expand, and Warwick establish. The partnership ran the end of its course towards the end of 2006 and the medical schools became autonomous institutions within their respective universities.

Leicester has been awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education on three occasions – the highest form of national recognition open to a UK academic or vocational institution.

In August 2015, HSBC announced for the second year running that the University of Leicester is the most affordable destination in Britain for both first and second-year students, according to their research. In 2013 our Students’ Union was named HE Students’ Union of the Year in the NUS Awards.

Our popular programmes are Biological Sciences, Economics, Engineering, Law, Medicine and Physics.

Facilities

The David Wilson Library opens 24/5 during term time, providing hundreds of PCs, laptop loans, group study rooms, plus wireless access throughout. Students also have access to the digital library with more than 940,000 e-books and 75,000 e-journals.

A new Digital Reading Room provides an outstanding social learning space with an interactive table and wall. Here, students and staff can discover, collaborate, and share ideas online and in person. With its own café, the library is also a great spot to read or take time out.

Career Services

The Career Development Service provides support from the moment students arrive, through to graduation and beyond, with on-campus appointments, via Skype or telephone.

The annual Festival of Careers is one of the largest graduate recruitment events in the UK. Over 100 employers attend to promote internships and thousands of different graduate roles. The university also offers thousands of part-time and temporary jobs on campus to fit around studies, and support for start-up business ideas.

The Leicester Award is a personal development programme. Activities such as volunteering and professional mentoring help students explore what motivates, inspires, and interests them.
