University of Plymouth

University of Plymouth is founded in 1862. We have approximately 20,000 students, the University of Plymouth is one of the UK’s largest and most prominent institutions and is consistently rated amongst the top modern universities in the country; currently in the Top 10 Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2019.

Plymouth is a city located by the sea in the beautiful South West of England – ideal for both learning and leisure. Plymouth is 3 hours by train from London, and the University is set in the heart of the city centre with shops, facilities and attractions all within short walking distance, keeping daily living costs low.

In 2012 we were awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize in recognition of our worldwide reputation for marine and maritime education and research.

One of the most prestigious awards in UK Higher Education, it was presented to Professor Wendy Purcell, President, University of Plymouth by the Queen at a special ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

We’re also one of the few universities to have won the award twice, after winning the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for widening access to education in rural communities in 1994.

The University of Plymouth became the first university in the world to be awarded the Social Enterprise Mark, in recognition of our long-standing support for the sector. The award demonstrates our social value to the wider world and community, and is testament to the commitment, energy and vision that we pride ourselves on.

We have a strong strategy for sustainability, incorporating social economic and environmental principles that have been in place for nearly two decades. This includes short, medium and long term objectives measured against baseline data. We seek to deliver continuous improvement against our own performance.

Disclosing our approach to implementing sustainability at Plymouth is important to us. Since 2007 we have participated in the People & Planet Green League, coming first twice and second no less than four times.

The University has recently invested heavily in new buildings and facilities including a modern library (open 24/7), a Marine Centre, and extra computing facilities and teaching spaces. Additionally, the campus has its own gym, sports halls, cinema, theatre, dance studios and art gallery.

According to new research by Moonpig, Plymouth is officially the friendliest city in the UK. The study scored cities according to four ranking factors: generosity, welcome, trust, and online search interest in “friendship”, and Plymouth came out top.

Plymouth named the best holiday destination in Europe for 2020 and second best in the world by renowned travel magazine Condé Nast Traveller has taken notice of Plymouth’s significant developments, listing the city above Paris, Salvador and Kyoto as a surprise package for 2020.
