Seattle Central College was what began as the first community college in Seattle, WA, has grown into a thriving center for higher education that supports our dynamic and growing community. For more than 50 years, Seattle Central College has provided effective and accessible programs – including bachelor’s degrees, associate degrees and professional certificates – that prepare students to succeed in a range of endeavors.
Seattle Central was officially created on July 1, 1966, as “Seattle Community College,” the first two-year college in the city, and the 19th in Washington state. Its establishment filled a huge unmet need for affordable education and career training for the city’s residents. No longer would people have to travel to colleges in Everett, Bremerton or other areas outside of Seattle. Over the last few decades, Seattle Central has grown and evolved in significant ways in order to remain relevant and vital to its students and the community. In 2014, it changed its name again, to Seattle Central College, to reflect its status as an institution that awards four-year bachelor’s degrees, in addition to two-year associate degrees and short-term certificates.
Seattle Central offers a variety of high-quality, affordable programs — including bachelor’s degrees, associate degrees, career training and professional certificates — that can help you meet your educational and career goals. Seattle Central has several locations throughout the city that offer specialized programs and training — Health Education Center, Seattle Maritime Academy, Seattle Vocational Institute and Wood Technology Center. More than 15,000 students enrolled annually. While the student-faculty ratio is 15:1.
