University of Northampton

The University of Northampton is an amalgamation of Northampton’s colleges of art, technology and education, becoming the Nene College of Higher Education in 1975, before becoming the University of Northampton in 2005.

In September 2018, the university will relocate to a brand new £330 million Waterside campus, complete with a brand new learning hub, sports pavilion, low carbon energy centre and a new student union building, which was once a train engine shed. The Student’s Union is one of just three UK universities to offer free sports and societies to all students.

It is one of very few UK universities to offer two-year fast-track degrees (in management and marketing and law) and it also offers four-year extended degrees with a year in industry. It is internationally renowned for waste management education and research. Other renowned centres include Centre for Children and Youth (childhood and Children’s Geographies), Transpersonal Psychology, leather technology and lift engineering.

Northampton is within easy distance of London, Birmingham and other major centres, with easy access to international airports and railway stations.

To facilitate the university’s new style of learning, it has a brand new, purpose-built, high-tech campus, offering the best of both worlds. The Waterside campus is self-contained with everything students need by way of modern, spacious teaching and learning facilities, libraries, shops, food and drinks outlets, accommodation and recreational facilities all on a compact single campus.

The Creative Hub brings together creative and science disciplines in a flexible learning space on the banks of the River Nene, and is home to the university’s creative, workshop and laboratory specialist teaching spaces.

The Learning Hub houses 24/7 library facilities, superb social, eating and learning spaces and is designed to allow students and staff from different disciplines to work together and take learning out of the traditional classroom environment.

The Engine Shed is a superbly and sympathetically restored railway engine maintenance workshop, that has become the home of the Students’ Union. The Students’ Union continues to offer all sports and societies free of charge, so you can join in all the fun, without having to worry about the cost. The Students’ Union also operates the university’s town centre nightclub, café, bar and performance venue, The Platform.

The university provides opportunities for students to get into part-time work while they study or full-time work when they graduate. The university’s Changemaker Hub offers support with everything from CV writing to interview techniques.

Through the Northampton Employment Promise (NEP), the university works with local businesses to provide guaranteed temporary employment to graduates. If students follow three simple steps during their degree, the university promises to secure short-term paid internships for them once they graduate.
